Thanks to the wide availability of Firefox addons, I can customize my browser however I want. One such addon is for instant messaging, and can be found at http://sameplace.cc. It is a sidebar addon to Firefox that is very convenient. Some services that SamePlace supports include:

  • Gmail
  • Jabber
  • AIM
  • MSN
  • and more (of course)

It’s easy to set status messages with SamePlace, and multiple accounts are also supported. The toolbar at the top is great for sorting out contacts, searching, and setting a status message. You can even play games, as they say, and interact, as they say, but I tested this out and it didn’t work on Google Talk. Neither does the purported drag-and-drop images feature.

One of the unique features of this IM client is the extensibility. SamePlace supports scriptlets, which are addons for the addon. These are little snippets of code that can be implemented to show alerts, sound notifications, and even check your email.

My rating: 8/10 (some features don’t work). Get this if you have a fairly-high-res monitor.
