It never ceases to amuse and berate me that printers are so terrible at their main job, printing. One of their many shenanigans is failing to ever respond to user commands. Many a time I’ve had a document stuck in the printer queue, and when I go to the print icon in the System Tray to “cancel” the job, it hangs there in limbo until the next Ice Age.

Luckily, there is another way to free up the queue, for good.

(Disclaimer: This is for Windows Users.)

  1. Open up your Control Panel, and type in the Search Box “Administrative Tools”. Click on it.
  2. Click “Services”
  3. Scroll down to “Print Spooler”:print-spooler
  4. Right click the selected line, and click “Stop”
  5. Wait a few seconds.
  6. Right-click again, and press Start.

Voilà, the printer obeys your commands magically and you will be able to print your documents like nothing ever happened.
